There is presence of many pharmaceutical companies in Latvia, a Baltic country that lies between Lithuania and Estonia. Latvia is the pharmaceutical sector leader in the Baltics, and has a strong R&D, and manufacturing facilities.
The Latvian Association of Life Sciences Industry consist of the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. The industry has the 3rd highest turnover, and second-best export value in Latvia. Pharmaceutical products accounts for 37% of exports from the industry, and 1.2% of total national exports, at a value of 255 million euros in 2021. Latvia export 75.7% of chemicals and pharmaceuticals to neighbors such as Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Lithuania.
Successful pharmaceutical companies in Latvia are Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (BMC), Silvanols, PharmIdea, Olainfarm and Grindeks.
Grindeks developed oxytocin, while Olainfarm develops medication for tuberculosis, and Neuromidin, for treating memory disorders. Silvanols develops food supplements, medicines, medical equipments. The Pharmaceutical Industry in Latvia
The Association of International Research-based Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers (SIFFA) promotes pharmaceutical companies in Latvia. It started with 5 member companies, but now have 20 pharmaceutical companies in Latvia. Another association is the Latvian Generic Medicines Association, LGMA, with 14 member companies.
Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, have signed the Joint Baltic Drug Procurement Agreement, and medications used to treat diabetes, HIV, and TB, are subsidized by the government.
