There are many pharmaceutical companies in Mexico, the country with the second-largest pharmaceutical market in Latin America, after Brazil. They also rank in the 15 globally with a value of 7 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. The industry is estimated to grow up to $30.04 billion in 2025.
The industry generated 76 billion Mexican pesos and employed 54 thousand workers in 2020. Despite this, there is demand for imported drugs. In 2021, the pharma industry further generated $15.48 billion, but imported medicines and medical devices worth USD 5.9 billion. Most of the drug imports are from the United States and Germany.
Most of the pharmaceutical production are antibiotics, analgesics etc. There are as many as 400 laboratories of the manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Mexico. The manufacturing are done in cities such as Mexico City, Jalisco, Mexico, Puebla, and Morelos.
The top pharmaceutical companies in Mexico by revenue in 2021 are Johnson & Johnson México, Bayer México, Genomma Lab International, Sanofi, Roche, Pfizer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Novartis, AstraZeneca, Farmacéuticos MAYPO, Bausch Health, and Merck.
The Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks Comisión Federal de Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (COFEPRIS) in 2020 mapped out plans to speed up the approval process for generics and biosimilars in Mexico. This is to enable manufacturers to file for registration of generics and biosimilars the next day after patent approval.
Mexico is an appealing destination to foreign pharmaceutical companies due to low cost of production and clinical trials and nearness to the US. US is the largest investor in the sector.
Mexico also has Free Trade Agreements with countries such as Canada, Japan, US, Israel.
Another association, The Mexican Association of Pharmaceutical Research Industries, A. C. (AMIIF) represent 40 Mexican pharmaceutical companies, and other associated multinational pharmaceutical companies in Mexico. At least 20 out of the 25 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world are present in Mexico.
