There are close to 300 biotech companies in Berlin and Brandenburg biotech ecosystem, one of the largest biotech cluster in Germany alongside Munich. These companies are diversified into fields like active molecule development, regenerative medicines, proteomics and genomics, molecular diagnostics and bioanalytic, and industrial biotechnology.
The major focus, however, is “red biotechnology,” which is the application of biotechnology to medicine and pharmaceuticals. 80% of the biotech companies in Berlin and Brandenburg work in biomedicine. Some facilities in the region supports biotech companies with spaces and offices like the BiotechPark Berlin-Buch and the Science and Technology Park Adlershof.
There are major research institutes such as Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association, Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology of the Max Delbrück Center, and Helmholtz-Institut für translationale AngioCardioScience (HI-TAC). All are located in the Max Delbrück Center.
Research institutes such as the The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, The Leibniz Institute for Ananlytical Science, and the Humboldt University’s Institute for Chemistry are also found in Berlin.
