Leading biotech companies in South Korea include Samsung Bioepis, Samsung Biologics, Medipost, Cha Biotech, LigaChem Biosciences, Alteogen, Orum Therapeutics, Celltrion, among others.
There are over 1000 biotech companies in South Korea of which most of them are startups especially university spinoffs. The major focus areas include biosimilars, biopharma manufacturing, therapeutic areas like cell and gene therapies. South Korea has invested heavily in R&D with an estimated total of $2.9 billion from 2020 to 2022.
There are success stories and breakthrough in the industry. Samsung Bioepis has eight FDA-approved biosimilars, while Celltrion has six. The Korean Ministry of Food & Drug Safety (MFDS) has approved 15 cell therapies and three gene therapies. Medipost developed the first ever allogeneic umbilical cord blood-derived stem cell therapy, Cartistem, for knee osteoarthritis. Alteogen developed drug formulation platform, hyaluronidase (ALT-B4) that helps convert intravenous drugs to subcutaneous formulations.
LigaChem Biosciences developed ConjuAll, an advanced antibody-drug conjugate. This has won the ‘Best ADC Platform Technology’ for six consecutive years.
South Korea is the 13th largest biopharma industry globally with an estimated value of $22 billion. Seoul, the capital city is the city with the largest number of pharmaceutical-related clinical trials in 2022. The country in general ranks 5th for clinical trials globally.
The smart-city Songdo is the largest biopharma production globally in terms of capacity. There are many bio-clusters which include Seoul Bio-hub, Songdo Bio-Cluster (Incheon), Osong Medical Industrial Complex, among others.
