With the biotech market in the Middle East estimated to grow to $2.6 million by 2028, UAE and Saudi Arabia are positioned to be major drivers in the sector. The majority of biotech companies in the UAE are based in Dubai, but there is a growing presence in Abu Dhabi. The sector has received more funding than any other biotech sector in any MEA region in recent years.
The biotech sector in the UAE is focused on personalized medicine and genomics, and has set up its Genomics Program to identify the genetic makeup of its citizens.
There are some initiatives that seek to promote the biotech industry in the UAE, such as the Dubai Science Park (DuBioTech), the first free zone in the Middle East, to booster the life sciences and biotech industry.
Abu Dhabi is home to Masdar City Free Zone Life Sciences Cluster, life sciences and biotechnology hub backed by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office.
Also, the UAE’s Biotechnology Research Center (BRC), uses molecular, cellular, and digital technological advancement to promote the biotech sector.
