The biotechnology sector in Nigeria is still at a developing stage. There are still few established biotechnology companies in Nigeria, especially in key sectors like health, food, and agriculture.
Efforts by the government to improve the sector includes the establishment of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), an agency under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, in 2001. The agency has the primary objective of carrying out research and development and funding in key biotech sectors like food, agriculture, health, industry and the environment.
The biotech sector in Nigeria has its own challenges, such as poor funding and infrastructure. A promising genomics biotech startup, 54gene, closed operations after raising $45 million, due to alleged power struggle and legal battles.
