Spain is the leading country in Europe for clinical trials especially in the area of pharmceutical and biotechnology. The coutry conducted more trials than any country in Europe (including Germany) in 2023, performing over 900 clinical trials.
The country also ranks high globally in terms of active clinical trials participation, as about one-third of European trials involve Spain participation. As of December 2024 (ClinicalTrials.gov), Spain (22,025 studies) ranked fourth in Europe for the highest clinical trial participation, below France (37,919 studies), Germany (26,190 studies), and Italy (22,068 studies).
The high number of clinical trials is boosted by high level of infrastructure, good number of researchers and scientists, a diverse patient population, strategic location of the country, and a streamlined regulatory framework.
Most of the clinical trials in Spain are carried out in hospitals and medical research centers in the Catalonia and Madrid region.
Spain has implemented some harmonised EU strategies and regulations such as the Clinical Trials Regulation (CTR) and the Clinical Trials Information System (CTIS) to streamline clinical trials in the EU.
