Majority of the essential oil manufacturers in South Africa are found in Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng. Major players include Qobo Qobo, Scatters Oils, Cape Mountain Oils, Busby Oils (B.O.N), EZE Oils, Ayanda African Oils, Highland Essential Oils, SOiL Organic Aromatherapy, and Nautica Organics.
Key essential oils found in South Africa include indigenous scents like Rose Geranium, Buchu, Fynbos, but also Eucalyptus, Wormwood Artemisia, Rosemary, Lavender, Tea Tree, Peppermint, and Lippia. The most widely used extraction methods include primarily steam distillation, hydro-distillation for delicate florals, and cold pressing for seed oils.
SAEOPA (Southern African Essential Oil Producers Association) is a non-profit organization, established in 2000, to promote the production of essential oils and other products from natural plants in South Africa. It has about 190 membership in 2023 with majority of the members from South Africa, but also some members from other countries like Botswana, Uganda, and Namibia.
