The Indian government through the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), has backed biofoundries and biotech clusters. They supported biotech related projects with USD 1.1 billion allocation in 2021.
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has supported 11 Biotechnology Parks across various states in India. Also, there are 52 BIRAC-supported bio-incubators.
Some of the clusters include NCR Biotech Cluster along the Gurgaon Highway, Genome Valley in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Navi Mumbai/MIDC, and Chennai. The Southern cities of India such as Bangalore and Hyderabad boost the presence of many research institutes, biotech parks, and academic institutes like the Indian Institute of Science and the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP).
In Western India, Maharashtra’s cities like Pune and Mumbai remains the major biotech hubs, while in Eastern India, infrastructure like the Kolkata Biotech Park, is helping to boost the biotech sector in Odisha. In Northern India, there are initiatives like the Biotech Park in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Biotech Park in Faridabad, and other research institutions in Delhi.
