The medical device industry is worth $40 billion in 2021. The industry has an expected annual “CAGR” of 5.5 per cent from 2022 to 2027. Japan is home to the largest US medical device companies like 3M, Edwards Lifesciences, Medtronic, GE Healthcare, Johnson & Johnson, Abbott, Stryker, and Zimmer.
Many medical device companies in Japan are manufacturers of equipment like diagnostic equipment (X-ray apparatus and computer technology (CT) scanners), therapeutic equipment (catheters, cardiopulmonary bypasses (CPB)), dental materials and surgical gloves. Japan is one of the largest manufacturers of medical devices, with Olympus Corporation and Terumo Corporation, being the largest manufacturers in terms of revenue.
Olympus Corp dominates the gastrointestinal endoscope, while Terumo controls the cardiac and vascular segment.
The Pharmaceutical and Medical Device (PMD) Act in 2014 regulates Japan’s pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and medical device sectors.
