Manufacturing activities of pharmaceutical companies in New Zealand are licensed by the New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority (Medsafe). Medsafe uses the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guide for Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperation Scheme (PIC/s) to accomplish this goal. PHARMAC is a government agency responsible for paying for selected pharmaceutical products for New Zealand citizens. The agency negotiates contracts and prices of pharmaceutical products.
There are currently 21 listed approved medicine manufacturing sites in New Zealand. They produce drug classes such as antibiotics, hormones and steroids, vaccines and sera, sterile preparations, antineoplastic agents and immunosuppressive agents, preparations, other than vitamins, with doses of 5 mg or less per dose unit, others.
The biggest pharmaceutical manufacturers in New Zealand are Baxter Healthcare Ltd, Douglas Manufacturing Ltd, Biomed Ltd, and API Consumer Brands. Most of the drugs produced are generic drugs. It is important to note that not all the pharmaceutical companies in New Zealand are manufacturers. Some are multinational research based companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Roche, Merck Sharp and Dohme, Janssen-Cilag, Eli Lilly, and Novartis.
Sales representatives, medical conferences, journals, continuing medical education meetings, and television advertising are all used to promote and market pharmaceutical products.
