There are many pharmaceutical companies in the Philippines, with the pharma sector made of a mix of multinational corporations (MNCs) and local manufacturers and distributors. The multinational corporations (MNCs) such as Pfizer, Glaxosmithkline, Astellas Pharma, Boehringer Ingelheim, and AstraZeneca, market and distribute raw materials and finished drug products. The Philippines relies heavily on imported pharmaceutical products from countries like the US, India, and Germany.
However, local pharmaceutical companies in the Philippines such as Unilab and Pascual Laboratories manufacture medicines locally. There are about 403 pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in 2021. 14 of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies own a manufacturing site in the Philippines.
The pharmaceutical market in the Philippines is the third largest in the ASEAN region behind Indonesia, and Thailand.
The Philippines has one of the highest out-of-pocket health expenditures in the Asia-Pacific region. The country also has one of the most attractive pharmaceutical markets in the ASEAN region due to large population, high demand for generics.
In 2020, the pharma market in the Philippines was estimated at $3.3 billion. According to the Trade Undersecretary and Board of Investments (BOI), Managing Head, Ceferino Rodolfo, the pharmaceutical industry in the Philippines is expected to grow up to PHP216 billion by 2024.
