South Africa is one of the main medical device markets in Africa, with market size of R21 billion in 2021 and projected growth of R29.6 billion by 2025. There are few medical device manufacturers in South Africa, while more than 76% of medical devices are imported. The manufacturing output is about US$200 million to US$300 million, with most of the products exported to countries especially in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Europe.
The local manufacturing focus on low-tech and low-value devices like surgical goods and disposable needles, but there are also instances of manufacture of hi-tech devices, like the design and manufacture of advanced breast imaging technology and low radiation full body Xray machines.
The medical device import to South Africa is dominated by countries like China, USA, Germany. There are between 350 to 600 medical equipment suppliers in South Africa. The regulation of medical devices is a function of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPR).
