Jordan has one of the most advanced pharma sector in the MENA region. There are over 20 manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Jordan. The pharmaceutical exports from the sector in 2020-21 stood at JD1 billion, which makes it the only sector in Jordan than exports more than it imports.

The Jordanian Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (JAPM), which was started in 1996, has 13 pharmaceutical companies in Jordan as main members. These pharma companies contribute 95% of total pharmaceutical manufacturing in Jordan. There are also four research centres that are affiliate members of the JAPM.

Jordan pharmaceutical companies source their raw materials (API) from China, India and other Asian counterparts. Jordan exports 80% of pharmaceutical products, which are mainly branded generics. The pharma sector is the second largest in Jordan after garment industry. Pharmaceutical companies in Jordan exports to neighbors such as Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Sudan, Libya.

They import medicines from countries such as the US, Switzerland.

Hikma pharmaceutical is the largest pharmaceutical industry in Jordan. Though it has its headquarters in London, they started the company in Amman, Jordan in 1978. The company has many manufacturing plants in numerous countries and generates $2 billion in sales of drugs. They export to the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
