The medical device market in Vietnam in 2022 is worth 1.5 billion USD, increasing from 1.1 billion USD in 2017. It is expected to grow at an annual CAGR rate of 9.7% from 2021-2026 and hit USD 2.1 billion by 2026. The few medical equipment manufacturers can only supply 10% of the country’s needs and manufacture low-tech products like scalpels and disposable supplies. Most medical equipment suppliers in Vietnam rely on imported products, about 90%. Imported medical equipment has low import duties and no quota restrictions.
Most imports are from Japan, the US, Germany, Singapore, and Japan. They include diagnostic imaging equipment (X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography scanners) and surgical equipment. Other equipment is used for endoscopy, testing, sterilization, and medical waste treatment.
The regulation of medical devices is the function of the Department of Medical Equipment and Construction (DMEC), a specialised department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Health.
