The pharmaceutical industry in Egypt boosts the largest production and consumption in Africa and the Middle East despite the political instability. Pharmaceutical companies in Egypt are owned by either state or private entities. They value the pharmaceutical market at EGP 35.6 billion, only second to Saudi Arabia. Egypt and Morocco are major pharmaceutical industries in Africa.
The high population growth and urbanization are also contributory to the growth of the pharmaceutical industry in Egypt. The major drug classes in the Egypt market are prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, with prescription drugs (both branded and generic) forming the bulk of pharmaceutical sales in Egypt.
Pharmaceutical manufacturers in Egypt import most of the raw materials (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) needed for the production of drugs. They export most of the finished drug products to other African countries and Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) established by the Ministry of Health, is the main pharmaceutical industry regulator in Egypt. EDA has three other bodies: the Central Administration of Pharmaceutical Affairs (CAPA), the National Organization for Drug Control and Research (NODCAR), and the National Organization for Research and Control of Biologicals (NOCB).
The low cost of the labor force and the high presence of well-trained health workers such as pharmacists, doctors, and scientists are favorable to the overall growth of the pharmaceutical industry.

There are over 120 pharmaceutical companies in Egypt of which some of which are multinational companies with local production facilities. The private company, EIPICO, is the largest private involvement. Other companies such as Amoun and Pharco are also important players in the pharmaceutical field in Egypt.
