Tunisia is geopraphically close to Europe and enjoys a free trade relationship with its neighbors in Africa, the Middle East, and the European Union. There are over 120 pharmaceutical companies in Tunisia, with 39 of them involved in drug manufacturing.
Sanofi-Aventis, Pfizer, Inc. has a heavy presence in Tunisia’s pharmaceutical industry. They manufacture and distribute different pharmaceutical products. TERIAK Laboratory is another major manufacturing pharmaceutical company in Tunisia. UNIMED Laboratories are the main manufacturer of pharmaceutical sterile products in Tunisia.
Other major manufacturers are Adwya, SIPHAT, MEDIS, Taha Pharma, OPALIA PHARMA, and Cytopharma. Adwya is the largest local pharmaceutical manufacturer in Tunisia.
The National System of Quality Assurance of Medicines regulates pharmaceutical products, making sure they meet the standards. The emphasis on R & D also means there are up to 35 research centers and 150 laboratories for scientific research. Tunisia carries out 3.5% of the clinical trials in Africa.
There are over 50 drug production units. The products are drugs for human use, animal medicine, or medical equipment.
Tunisia is a major pharmaceutical player in Africa alongside Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. They export most of their products to other Francophone countries in Africa and the Middle East.
