Uganda is part of the East African Community (EAC) with a rapidly growing pharmaceutical industry. There are many manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Uganda with the chemical sector which also comprises the pharma market contributing over 10% of the country’s manufacturing value.

In the EAC, only countries like Kenya and Tanzania have larger pharma markets and industry than Uganda. The EAC region started a programme called Medicines Regulatory Harmonization (EAC MRH) initiative, to help coordinate and align drug regulations in the region.

The Uganda National Drug Authority has the primary function of fighting counterfeit drugs, carry out quality control assessment of drugs, and license outlets. They implemented a rule that charges 12 percent for some drugs imported into the country but exempts local pharmaceutical companies in Uganda that produce the same drugs. This is an effort to boost the local pharma capacity.

Pharmaceutical companies in Uganda hardly manufacture their own active pharmaceutical ingredients, rather they rely heavily on India and China for the raw materials. Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries (KPI) is the largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in Uganda in terms of volume. They produce over 60 generic medicines.

Cipla India has a WHO pre-qualified plant that manufactures anti-malarial, hepatitis and ARV drugs in Rwanda.

Apart from the pharmaceutical companies in Uganda, there are over 60 pharmaceutical distributors in the country.
