There are few pharmaceutical companies in Luxembourg, with the landlocked country of less than 1 million population benefiting from the Benelux Union for their pharmaceutical needs.
Benelux Union is a politico-economic union between Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Luxembourg speaks three languages: Luxembourgish, French and German.
The country has an advanced healthcare system and one of the highest expenditure per capita in Europe. Non-essential pharmaceutical products like vitamin preparations are 40% reimbursed, while medicines for treatment of long-term illness or hospitalization are fully reimbursed.
Generic medicines have low penetration in Luxembourg in the EU, which is 11% of the total reimbursed pharmaceuticals. This led to the Ministry of Health introducing the generic substitution policy in late 2014.
The Innovative Medicines Luxembourg is an association of members who are active in the pharmaceutical sector in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
