According to the Drug Control Authority (DCA) of the Ministry of Health, there are 263 licensed manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Malaysia in 2019. The biggest local pharmaceutical companies in Malaysia are Pharmaniaga Manufacturing Berhad, Hovid Berhad, Duopharma Biotech Berhad and Kotra Pharma (M)Sdn Bhd.

Currently, there are as many as 445 pharmaceutical companies in Malaysia, that could potentially generate MYR10 billion in 2024

Other important foreign owned pharmaceutical companies in Malaysia include Biocon Sdn. Bhd. (India), Oncogen Pharma (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., Y.S.P. Industries (M) Sdn Bhd (Taiwan), Sterling Drug (M) Sdn Bhd (the manufacturing arm of GlaxoSmithKline from UK), Ranbaxy (M) Sdn Bhd (India), Xepa-Soul Pattinson (M) Sdn Bhd (Singapore) and SM Pharmaceutical Sdn Bhd (India).

Most of the companies manufacture generics such as antibiotics, painkillers, health supplements. etc. There are foreign multinational pharma companies such as Pfizer, Schering Plough, Novartis, Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca in Malaysia. There is a huge presence of traditional Chinese Medicine producers, herbal and plant-based pharmaceuticals, nutraceutical companies in Malaysia.

The pharmaceutical market is estimated at $3.6 billion, with pharmaceutical sales expected to hit US$1,717.00 m in 2023.

Pharmaceutical Industry in Malaysia

Pharmaceutical Association of Malaysia (PhAMA) is an organization representing 41 pharmaceutical companies in Malaysia. These companies include the biggest domestic and international biopharmaceuticals involved in innovation, research, and development in the pharmaceutical sector.

Another body is the Malaysian Organization of Pharmaceutical Industries (MOPI), an organization open to manufacturer of pharmaceutical products in Malaysia.

As a member of Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperation/Scheme (PIC/S), Malaysia can export drugs to the EU, Canada, Australia.
