The United States is a big market for medical equipment suppliers in Hong Kong, providing US$ 509 million out of a total of US$ 3,062 medical devices imported into the territory. The devices include advanced radiation and ultrasound diagnostic equipment.
The medical device manufacturers in Hong Kong produce original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), like massagers and blood pressure monitors, telemedicine products, equipment for less invasive procedures, orthopaedic devices, and sterilised supplies.
Since there is no specific law guiding the manufacturing, sales, export and import of medical devices in Hong Kong, different products can be regulated by either the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance (Cap 138), the Radiation Ordinance (Cap 303), or the Telecommunications Ordinance (Cap 106).
The Medical Device Control Office (MDCO), a governing body under the Department of Health, regulates medical devices in Hong Kong.
