There are few pharmaceutical companies in Botswana, with less than five drug manufacturing factories. The country in South Africa is a major player in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The SADC countries such as Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia also plan to have a free trade agreement, hereby boosting the corporation in the pharma sector of the region. This project is called Zanzibona.
Botswana faces health challenges, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis. The government is trying to solve this by increasing the budgetary allocation to the health sector and opening up opportunities for investors in the pharmaceutical industry in Botswana.
There are two pharmaceutical companies in Botswana. They import bulk drugs, package and distribute them in the country. There is no local pharmaceutical company in Botswana with manufacturing capacity.
The Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority is charged with medical product registration, licensing, inspection, and approval of premises and products. There are about 70 registered pharmacies in Botswana, with most of them involved in the retail of medicines, medical equipments in the community pharmacy setting. We also have some few distributors of pharmaceutical products and medical devices in Botswana.
