Tanzania has one of the largest pharmaceutical market in Africa, with the few manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Tanzania unable to satisfy the drug needs of the East African country. The pharma market is expected to reach the value of $730 million by 2022.

Tanzania is a member of the Federation of East African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (FEAPM), an apex organisation for pharmaceutical manufacturers in the East African Community (EAC) consisting of Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Most of the local manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Tanzania import the raw materials and package the products. Most of the companies are pharmaceutical distributors who import drugs from countries such as China, India, Kenya, Egypt, European countries and the United States.

The manufacturing plants in Tanzania deals mostly with generic drugs, and export some medicines to its East African neighbors. The major pharmaceutical companies in Tanzania are Shelys Pharmaceuticals, Kairuki Pharmaceuticals Industry, Mansoor Daya Chemical, etc.

The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) is an executive agency of the Ministry of Health (MOH). They register, license and regulate the pharmaceutical sector and products to ensure that only genuine drugs are available for the public.
