Côte d’Ivoire, a country in West Africa, relies on mostly imported drugs, with the pharmaceutical companies in Ivory Coast unable to meet the drug needs of the country. There is also a big issue with counterfeit medicines, with the West African country struggling to regulate the infiltration of such drugs into the market.
The Directorate of Pharmacies, Medication and Laboratories (Direction de la Pharmacie, du Médicament et des Laboratoires, DPML) works to regulate the pharmaceutical sector in Ivory Coast. Another agency, the National Public Health Laboratory, makes sure the pharmaceutical products are of great quality.
Ten countries in Africa control 70 percent of Africa’s pharma market: Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Libya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, and Tunisia. Moroccan pharma companies such as Pharma 5 and Cooper pharma plan to extend their industries to Ivory Coast.
