The Pharmacy Council of Namibia determines the scope of practice, and set the standards and minimum requirements for pharmacy education and practice, regulation of pharmaceutical companies in Namibia, and also wholesalers, distributors, and retailers of pharmaceuticals.
The regulation of all health related practice and industry is a function of Health Professions Councils of Namibia (HPCNA). The Pharmacy Council of Namibia is under the HPCNA, and they regulate pharmacy through the Pharmacy Act 2004. The University of Namibia is the only university in Namibia offering a pharmacy degree.
An initiative, called ZAZIBONA, is a collaboration between medical regulatory authorities of Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is also helping members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to collaborate in registration of drug products through the Southern African Development Community Medicines Regulatory Harmonization (SADC-MRH) initiative. The active members of the ZAZIBONA are South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique.
Any pharmaceutical company that registers their pharmaceutical products in at least two of the members states of the ZAZIBONA is eligible to market its products in the remaining listed countries. This will reduce the problem of awaiting years to register a product in different countries. Some multinationals like Sandoz, Fresenius Kabi also use the method.
There are a limited number of pharmaceutical companies in Namibia. The country of about 2.5 million people depends mostly on imported drugs from pharmaceutical companies in neighbours such as South Africa, Kenya, other African countries, Europe and America.
Manufacturing companies in Namibia must receive the GMP licence from the Namibian Medicines Regulatory Council (NMRC).
Due to the lack of Quality Control laboratory, most local pharmaceutical manufacturers in Namibia send their Pharmaceutical Finished Products to their neighbour, South Africa, for quality assurance testing.
