There are few manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Iceland. Pharma firms such as Novartis, Alvotech, EpiEndo Pharmaceuticals, and Coripharma are manufacturing and investing heavily in research and development. The Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA) is charged with responsibilities such as the regulation of pharmaceutical products, diagnostic equipments, licensing of pharmaceutical companies in Iceland, both manufacturers and wholesalers.
Frumtök is the Icelandic Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry. The association was established on 26 October 2005 to ensure improvement in research and development of new drug molecules, tackling issues of healthcare in Iceland, collaborating with other Nordic countries in the pharmaceutical sector, and promotion of manufacturing of drugs, among other functions.
The members of Frumtök in Iceland are Abbvie, AMGEN, Astellas, Astrazeneca, Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GlaxoSmithKline, Islensk Erfdagreining, Janssen, Lilly, Lundbeck, MSD, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Roche, Sanofi.
There are few pharmaceutical companies in Iceland, unlike other Nordic neighbours such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark.
Major players in the pharmaceutical market in Iceland are Alvogen, Johnson & Johnson, Alvotech, Amgen, EpiEndo Pharmaceuticals ehf, Novartis AG, Pfizer Inc, Sanofi SA
There are some biotechnology companies in Iceland, such as Kerecis, Genis, Prokazyme, Saganatura, etc.
