There are over 100 manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Iran, with the country easily one of the largest producers of generic medicines in the Middle East and MENA region. CinnaGen, the largest biopharma company in Iran, produces biosimilars of leading immunology and cancer medications.

In 20199, the pharmaceutical sector is valued at €2.5 billion, but will grow up to €3.1 billion by 2024. Due to sanctions, Iran produce 90% of its medicine needs. They export drugs worth €90 million, to destinations in Central Asia. Germany also imports herbal medicines from Iran.

The pharmaceutical industry is highly consolidated in Government-owned specialized holdings, including Barekat Pharmed Co. (“Barekat”) and Tamin Pharmaceutical Investment Company (“TPICO”).
