Portugal has one of the advanced health sector in the European Union (EU) and the world. There are also many pharmaceutical companies in Portugal, with APIFARMA having 115 pharmaceutical companies listed as members. APIFARMA, the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Industry Association, was established in 1975 after succeeding National Guild of the Manufacturers of Medicinal Products (1939)
The organisation is diverse in operation and represents both over-the-counter, vaccines, prescription drugs, biotechnology and in vitro diagnostics.
Some indigenous pharmaceutical companies in Portugal are ATRAL, Tecnifar, Bial, IBERFAR, Bluepharma, Grupo AZEVEDOS, Basi Laboratories, Edol laboratories, Luso Medicamenta, MEDINFAR, and Tecnimede Group.
The Health Cluster Portugal, which was established in 2008, includes R&D pharmaceutical companies and hospitals. It has a purpose of making Portugal a force in innovation, research, manufacturing, product marketing and high-quality services in the health sector. Portugal pharmaceutical export from April 2020 and April 2021 moved from €92.2M to €106M, while imports moved from €92.2M to €106M.
Portugal has many multinational pharma companies, such as Johnson & Johnson, GSK, Philips, Sanofi, Servier, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Takeda, and over 200 companies distributing pharmaceutical products in Portugal.
