There are few pharmaceutical companies in Bahrain, a country in the Persian Gulf. The economy of the country is heavily reliant on the oil and gas industry and imports most of its medicines. Pharma market size was 2019 was $465 million, while expenditure was 284 million, one of the highest in the region.
Patented medicines control a higher percentage of the drug market than generic medicines. Foreign multinational pharma companies such as Roche, Merck and Co, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sandoz, GlaxoSmithKline, and Bristol-Myers Squibb, and the UAE-based Julphar dominate the market. They do not have local manufacturing plants in Bahrain but operate through regional distribution offices mostly located in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Bahrain imports most of its pharmaceutical products from Switzerland, Ireland, France, Germany, the US, and India.
There are two local manufacturing pharmaceutical companies in Bahrain — Gulf Biotech, and Bahrain Pharma. Biotech. Bahrain Pharma manufactures syrups, capsules and soft gels while Golf Biotech manufactures sterile products such as vials, ampoules, and prefilled syringes.
In December 2012, the NHRA’s Pharmaceutical Products Regulation Department was established to handle functions, such as inspecting pharmaceutical factories, regulatory functions, and licensing of pharmaceutical companies in Bahrain.
Major drug expenditure on medication in Bahrain is prescription drugs, with emphasis on novel cardiovascular drugs, drugs for respiratory conditions, and diabetes. The Kingdom of Bahrain has a high prevalence of diabetes, with 14.7% of the adult population facing the condition. Also, cardiovascular diseases result in 30% of deaths in the country.
