There are 22 medical suppliers and pharmaceutical companies in Ethiopia, but only 11 are involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing, especially generic medicines. The pharmaceutical market is set to hit US$1 billion by 2025 with a growth rate of 5.4% per year.
Ethiopia has many importers and distributors of medical equipment and pharmaceutical products, as local production cannot cater for the population’s medical needs. Pharmaceutical imports, especially finished products from India, Belgium, and the Netherlands, make up 75% of all medicinal products in Ethiopia. China is an emerging force in the market.
Local manufacturers can supply only 90 of the more than 380 products in the national essential medicines list. This shortage is a problem, in addition to a large population. The Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Agency (EPSA) is the most important buyer of products in the country.
The Ethiopian government tends to turn the tide and improve the manufacturing sector by establishing the Kilinto Pharmaceutical Industrial Park (KPIP) and instituting a 10-year national strategic plan of action (NSPA) for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The Food, Medicine, and Healthcare Administration and Control Authority (FMHACA) oversees the regulation of the pharmaceutical sector in Ethiopia.
